Volunteers are the backbone of our medical missions. A successful mission requires a group of dedicated individuals who are prepared to contribute their knowledge and skill in return for a rewarding volunteer experience abroad.
While we welcome anyone interested in volunteering to apply, some basic guidelines may assist in determining if an MCI medical mission is a good fit for you:
- Physical health: The locations of our missions can be physically demanding, from heat and humidity (India), to mountainous, high-altitude terrain (Tibet), so good physical health is an essential requirement for our volunteers.
- Finances: Meals and lodging will always be provided at our destinations. However, volunteers are responsible for the cost of their own transportation to and from the destination country, as well as any additional traveling they wish to pursue before or after the volunteer mission. For many trips, there will also be a fee for acquiring VISAs and meeting any other travel requirements of our host countries.
- Interpersonal skills: Our missions are most effective when our volunteers work well as a team. Cooperation and good communication are essential, and egos should be left at home.
- Availability: Our destinations are primarily in remote locations, resulting in limited transportation options. Because of this, we need volunteers to be able to commit to the scheduled dates of travel. If necessary, exceptions will be made for medical and/or family emergencies.
Since the goal of our missions is to treat patients and spread health education and awareness, the majority of our participating volunteers will be medical professionals. Physicians, nurses, physical therapists and optometrists are all encouraged to apply.
Because of the medical nature of our missions, preference will always be given to medical volunteers and their spouses. However, some of our missions will include a limited number of spots for non-medical volunteers. Please include any special skills you may have on your volunteer application, even if you're not sure they will be applicable.
