2009 Medical Mission to India
MCI made its inaugural medical mission in September 2009 to Drepung Loseling Monastery's medical clinic. Loseling Altruistic Medical Association (LAMA) is a charitable medical association registered with the government of Karnataka, India. The medical association runs the Loseling Clinic, located in the Tibetan Colony near Mundgod in Karnataka State, and conducts free medical camps in local villages.
During a 7-day visit to the LAMA Clinic, a multi-disciplinary team of health care providers evaluated 825 medical patients. The team included four physicians, two registered nurses, an epidemiologist, and a psychotherapist. The physician specialties included family practice, emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and cardiology. The team brought with them donated prescription and over-the-counter medications, gauze and bandages, cotton swabs, ace wraps, approximately 1000 pairs of prescription and sunglasses, nasal bulb syringes, a respiratory nebulizer, and bulk amounts of alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
